Protocols and Procedures

Below you will find the main protocols and procedures used in collecting representative sewage samples from cities around the world.

There is an increasing interest for monitoring the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in nonclinical reservoirs. It is virtually impossible to obtain samples from healthy humans and there can be ethical problems with sensitivity of data collected from individuals. Thus, sewage has been suggested as an alternative to obtain population-wide samples.

The following are the participant protocols and other relevant documents for participants to participate in the Global Sewage Surveillance project.

There is the Wet lab protocol (prehandling and DNA extraction of sewage).

There is the Dry lab protocol (metagenomic sequencing and data analysis).
