Three disappointed bioinformaticians

Field sequencing in Africa – a short diary of the experience (Day 9 Three disappointed bioinformaticians)

This series of posts is about a field experiment that took place between 14-26 February 2022, by Frank M. Aarestrup.

As part of their collaboration, a group of researchers from the National Institute for Medical Research of Tanzania, the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Copenhagen embarked on an expedition to test a new low-cost, low-tech sequencing approach to analyzing microorganisms under real life conditions.

Day 9: Three disappointed bioinformaticians

The next day, Dr. Mbilu, Sonda and I went to visit the local veterinary diagnostic and surveillance service to discuss potential collaboration, while the rest went to see the results. When we went back, we could see the outcome from the distance. Not good, but there might be one Neisseria meningitis and one Streptococcus pneumonia read out of more than half a million of what looked like human reads.

It was a long, all-afternoon drive to Singida.

Go to days 10-13 diary entry.
