On 7 November 2018, the Novo Nordisk Foundation made their first site visit to the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark to hear about the progress thus far in the Global Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance project.

The Global Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Programme and started 1 July 2017. The project is scheduled to be completed on 30 June 2023.

The basic hypothesis of the project is that human sewage can be used to detect and, when combined with modelling, can explain global emergence and trends in antimicrobial resistance.

During this first site visit, representatives from the Novo Nordisk Foundation heard presentations regarding

  • Sampling and routine sequencing,

  • Building the informatic infrastructure,

  • Visualising data,

  • Improving sequencing,

  • Improving read mapping,

  • Reducing dark matter,

  • Advanced epidemiological modelling,

  • Longitudinal data, and

  • Data in global context.

The focus of the first year of the project was on executing a pilot project, establishing the infrastructure and initiating the relevant research.

Future site visits are expected annually.
